Asbestos Agency Ltd. is a company based in Plymouth and Exeter, Devon, that exists to help individuals, businesses and organisations all over the South West to understand the levels and locations of asbestos-based materials that there may be in their premises and workplaces.
Businesses are legally obliged under a number of regulations to ensure the safety of their workforce. Asbestos must be presumed to be present in materials encountered in the workplace (e.g. in repairs or alterations to premises) unless you have good reasons not do so.

When materials containing asbestos are disturbed or damaged, small fibres become airborne. Inhaling these fibres can cause scarring and inflammation of the lungs, this can affect breathing and lead to diseases. For example, lung cancer, mesothelioma and nonmalignant lung and pleural disorders.
Diseases from asbestos exposure take a long time to develop. Most cases of lung cancer or asbestosis in exposed workers occur 15 or more years after initial exposure to asbestos. The UK Health and Safety Executive estimates that asbestos now kills between 3,000 and 3,500 people in Britain every year and that this death rate will increase to between 5,000 and 10,000 in the first quarter of the 21st century.
